1840: 1 d. black, Plate 6, lettered RI, a used example with large margins all round and portions of adjoining stamps at left and at top, tied to 1840 cover from Newton Stewart to Edinburgh by Maltese Cross struck in "magenta / dull reddish purple" ink. Reverse with framed "Newton Stewart" despatch handstamp (Dec 16) in the same ink as the Cross and Edinburgh arrival in orange-red. This cover mentioned in Alcock & Holland on page 31 and listed in Rockoff & Jackson on page 442. Seal missing on reverse and two file folds well away from the adhesive but of great rarity. Cert. 1840: 2 d. blue, Plate 1, lettered ED, a used example with just clear margin at lower right and large margins on three sides, on 1840 local double rate "May Date" cover to Portman Square, London, tied by Maltese Cross in red. "T. P. / High Holborn EC" handstamp in red at left and reverse showing framed arrival (May 16, 1840) clearly struck in red. Ironed out vertical file fold through the adhesive and sensible small repairs to the part letter sheet, one flap missing and restored lower left corner and centrally within address, but a rare and very early usage. Listed in Rockoff & Jackson on page 143, with just three 2 d. blue covers known for this Saturday date, ex 'Besançon' Gi DS5td = £ 15'000. 1840: 2 d. blue, Plate 2, lettered RG-RH, a used horizontal pair with large margins all round and showing portions of adjoining stamps at top and at left, used on quadruple weight 1842 cover to Blandford, tied by DORCHESTER double arc datestamps (June 23, 1842) in black. The fine pair of fresh colour with RH showing the constant variety with coloured "√" in NW corner unobscured by the rare cancellation, the letter mentioning enclosures. Reverse with Blandford arrival datestamp in black. Just one other 1840 2 d. blue pair on cover cancelled by Wessex town datestamps is recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index (lettered NH-NI) which is heavily repaired. An extraordinarily rare and attractive cover, an Exhibition item of the highest calibre for the connoisseur of classic Great Britain. Cert. RPSL (1970) Gi DS8xb+DS8xbe = £ 28'000+. 1840: 2 d. blue, Plate 2, lettered QJ-QL / RK-RL, an irregular block of five with close (QJ) to large margins all round, of fine fresh colour, tied to 1842 cover from Norwich to Saxmundham by five strikes of the Maltese Cross in black. The cover with ironed file fold through the block and the somewhat heavy cancellation fingerprint marks reduced on QJ-QK, stamp QL showing the re-entry at top. Reverse with italic "Too Late" in black and fine "Norwich" double arc cds (Jan 22) alongside Saxmundham cds (Jan 24). Rare - the third largest block from Plate 2 recorded on cover in the Karl Louis Card Index.
