top, tied to 1840 cover from Newton Stewart to Edinburgh by Maltese
Cross struck in "magenta / dull reddish purple" ink. Reverse with
framed "Newton Stewart" despatch handstamp (Dec 16) in the same ink
as the Cross and Edinburgh arrival in orange-red. This cover
mentioned in Alcock & Holland on page 31 and listed in Rockoff &
Jackson on page 442. Seal missing on reverse and two file folds
well away from the adhesive but of great rarity. Cert. BPA (1989)
