1933 Hungarian Mediterranean Circular Flight with "GERLE" HA-AAI
(Feb.19 - March 24): Group of 25 postcards sent from Budapest to
Oran, Tripolis, Jerusalem, Athens, Rome and vice-versa, of which
twelve bearing special label "HUNGARIAN MEDITERRANEAN CIRCULAR
FLIGHT and special handstamps in magenta or bluegreen, including
mail from Budapest (11) with one to Athens forwarded via Alexandria
to Shanghai, China, card from Oran to Budapest, two cards from
Tripolis (Libya), three items from Athens of which two with special
handstamp 'Remis à la poste après le départ de l'avion "GERLE 13"
as well as five cards from Jerusalem (3), Haifa (2, with one
'Dispatched after departure" in violet back to Budapest. A very
fine and scarce assembly. The two-seat, single-engine sport biplane
"Gerle" (Hungarian: "Dove") designed by Antal Bánhidi, was built in
Hungary in the early 1930s and became famous making a long-distance
flight of 12,258 km around the Mediterranean
