bistre, used from Soerabaya to Gunnedah, New South Wales, lightly
cancelled by diamond of dots and prepaying 25 cents for a 1⁄2 ounce
ship letter to New South Wales. Despatch datestamp at upper left
with the sailing ship arriving at Melbourne where the scarce framed
“MIS-SENT TO / MELBOURNE -VICTORIA” handstamp in black was applied.
The cover was redirected multiple times within New South Wales
before delivery in Sydney. Some minor cover creases consistent with
it’s journey, but a scarce inwards destination to the Australian
Colonies. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Surabaya 12 May
1880 to Melbourne (21 July). Wm. Howard Smith & Sons: Departed
Melbourne (23 July) per “Cheviot” to Sydney (24 July); by rail via
Gunnedah (25 July) to Sydney, arriving 31 July 1880 (80 days)
