Lots & Collections, 1858/94: Collection of over 90 used stamps mounted upon 13 album pages, presenting an illustrated study of postmarks on early Colombian stamps used in Colon and Panama. Comprises singles, bisects, multiples and a block of four, with some rare usages and cancellations. Includes examples from the Colombian first issue 1859/60 through to 1886 Republic of Colombia. Noted postmarks included; red oval 'Colon', the ornate undated diamond 'Colon' cancel in blue (2) and in green (1), several different types of 'Panama' oval and boxed rectangular, manuscript 'Panama', registered, 'Panama / Franco' oval, 'Panama / de Oficio', 'David' unboxed straight line, 'Hacienda', 'Santiago' and the Panama Postal Agency cds. Additionally, two fragments, one franked with a mixed franking of a Colombia Late Fee 1892 'Retardo' 2½ c. dark blue & rose and a bisect Map of Panama 1892 10 c. orange. 1858/1932: Fine lot including a 1 d slate blue on cover from Lima to Genova, Italy, and a 20 c 1867 on a double-weight cover from Lambayeque to Piura. Also included is a group of proofs from the 1909 Portrait Issue, 1 c grey to 50 c yellow, all in unused matching blocks of twelve (6 x 2), each marginal from the base, showing the American Bank Note Co. imprint in the margin, overprinted SPECIMEN in red or black and punch-holed for security, with fresh colours. Additionally, the lot contains Postage Due 2 c purple-brown and 10 c purple-brown from the 1932 issue, redrawn by Harrisons & Sons of London, presented in complete sheets of 100 stamps for both values, all overprinted "CANCELLED" in black. 1865/1952: Assortment of specialised material, predominately back of the book, comprising Special Delivery Stamps/mail (express), Registration Stamps, Air Post and a few esoteric pieces. Included are a set of unused 1926/1929 express stamps with varieties "Double Overprint" on 20 c. and the "EXRPESO" variety on both the 10 c. orange & black and 20 c. brown & black in unused blocks of four (Scott E1a/E2a = $ 378+ as singles), also a scarce express stamp usage on a 1924 10 c. red registered stationery envelope (H&G C3) franked with 2 c. carmine and 1929 Express 10 c. orange sent to Sandusky, Ohio. A group of eleven air post items including several overprint varieties, for example; 1929 25 c. on 10 c. "Inverted Surcharge" (Scott C1a), also 10 c. orange "Inverted Overprint" and an example of "Double Overprint" (Scott C2a-C2b) and an example with a red overprint (Scott indicates this as possibly a proof), as well as "Imperforate Between" varieties on both the 1935 10 c. on 20 c. and the 1931 5 c. - which is in a strip of three (Scott C18b & C15b = $ 175+) with one vertical perforation between first & second stamp (left marginal side) and three examples of the 1952 2 c. in red on 1949 10 c. showing varieties including on a vertical strip of four showing variety "Surcharge Omitted" (Scott C127a = $ 250+) and also singles with "Transposed" & "Triple" overprint respectively (unlisted). There is also an air mail cover franked with two 25 c. on 20 c. dark brown sent to Argentina. Several other items including; 3 covers, a cover front, British Consular fiscals used in Colon, an 1865 "Estado Soberano de Panama" Une Peso bank note (faults but rare) and various stamp items relating to registered (2 blocks of four) and "A.R." Two unused blocks of 45 of the 'Habilitado' 1894 5 c. on 20 c. showing the three surcharge settings in the horizontal rows both with large part og. (Scott 24/25), a block of 50 1894 'Habilitado' 10 c. on 50 c. brown on pelure paper being the left half of the sheet with fifth vertical column showing "Curved Serifs to "1" in overprint" (Scott 30) and, also in the fifth column "CENTAVO" for CENTAVOS errors and "HABILITAD" for HABILITADO errors (Scott 29+30 var) fresh and fine but for some minor creasing large part og. mostly unmounted and comes with a block of 30 which has some faults. Also, a block of 6 and 4 of the 1903 Panama City 2 c. carmine the former with imprint to left marginal both with large part og. And 1911 Imperforate plate Proof blocks of four for the 10 c. and 13 c. printed in green without surcharge - not issued in Panama and only produced for use in the Canal Zone - (Scott 53/54). A registered cover franked with 1892 10 c. orange pair in combination with Colombia 10 c. registration stamp sent to Guatemala and a 1904 10 c. orange on cover to New York. Lastly, 1949 Airmail 5 c. orange American Banknote Co. Proof engraved on thick paper with ABN imprint at base and file number '82145' above (69 x 71mm.). Forwarding Agent Mail 1825/1870: Collection of 40 stampless covers all with forwarding agent marks, predominately cachets, although some early manuscript examples such as; 1825 cover from Guayaquil, Ecuador to Providence, Rhode Island with "McGregor, Hardisty & Wilson" Panama forwarding agent endorsed "p. Williams" which has straightline 'Commercial Rooms' (Jamaica) mark to front in black. Covers are mainly illustrated on album pages, with a handful loose, with over 20 agent marks presented all which are uncommon and several rare. Noted rare triple forwarded entire sent 1845 Havana to Lima, Peru with manuscript "Encaminada por SS Casamayor y Cia, Santiago de Cuba 18 Aprile 1845" thence to second Agent with "Forwarded by y.o.s. Elin Wright & Co., Kingston, Jamaica" then to third Agent and reverse struck with "PANAMA / FORWARDED BY / FREDERICK W. BYRNE" cachet in black. Also, among others; 1854 Barranquilla to New York doubly forwarded with oval "FORWARDED BY / RAMON LEON SANCHEZ / CARTAGENA N.G." in red and superb strike of very rare "T.R. COWAN / COMMISSION AND FORWARDING / MERCHANT. / AGENT M. S. P'KT. CO. / NAVY BAY CHAGRES" oval handstamp also in red. Condition is mixed in places although many fine and a couple which are impressive. A rare and valuable assembly. Ex the Brian Moorhouse estate

Also noted, among others, a fine strike of the 'Via Panama' straightline in black on an 1872 cover from London to Guatemala and a fine strike of the 'Panama / Transit' two-lined undated in red on a cover from Santiago, Chile to Italy. Several scarcer usages and early pre-philatelic marks; noted among others; 1857 unpaid cover New York to Bogotá addressed to Tomas de Mosquera (later President of Colombia) with superb circular "ADMINISTRACION DE CORREOS DE COLON / DABE" in red ('Dabe' an error for 'Debe'); 1859 prepaid entire letter to New York with oval framed "BOGOTÁ / FRANCA" and fine circular "ADMINISTRACION DE CORREOS DE COLON / FRANCA" in red and an oval "FORWARDED BY / C.J. FOX / ASPINWALL" Agent's cachet in red. Also, Colombia 1883 20 c. violet used on an 1888 Canal stationery envelope sent to Paris tied by the Panama agency duplex with a Paris transit mark alongside. Additionally, a cover front with a fine strike of the 'PANAMA / FRANCO' oval in red. Mixed in places but a rare assembly. Swiftsure", Pacific Station, care of H.M. Consul in Panama, tied by "SANDWICH" cds (April 1) in black. Another incoming cover 1907 from Oslo to ship "S.S. Fornebo" at Colon, Panama franked by Norway Posthorn 20 ö. blue tied by Kristiania machine cancel (Dec 31). Reverse with "Agencia Postal / Colon" cds (Jan 21, 1908) in violet, ship had sailed and struck on obverse with scarce "NON RECLAMADA" and "REBUT / COLON, / REP. DE PANAMA" cachets in violet. Endorsed “To be called for” at top and the 1 d. adhesive tied by a London transit (May 14) in red. Despite cover imperfections, a very rare franking. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Colon 23 April 1869 per “Seine” via Jamaica (26 April), Jacmel (27 April) and St. Thomas (29 April) to Plymouth (13 May); by rail via London (14 May) to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton 15.5 per “Pera” via Malta 24.5 to Alexandria (28 May); overland to Suez; “Deccan” (30 May) to Galle (13 June); “Geelong” (16 June) via King Georges Sound (1 July) to Melbourne, arriving 6 July 1869 (75 days). Note: Three covers are recorded from Panama to the Australian Colonies with this being the only cover recorded via the Southampton route. Two others are recorded, both mailed direct from Panama to Australia via the 1866-67 contract

Incoming Mail via Panama 1866 (Aug 7): Entire from San Francisco, USA via Panama to Melbourne, Victoria with Great Britain 1865 1 s. green, rounded corner perf., tied by a very fine “C35” obliterator of the British P.O. with fine Panama datestamp at left, prepaying 1 s. for a 1 ounce ship letter to Victoria. The entire endorsed “Per Steamer via Panama” and with Sydney and Melbourne arrival datestamps on the reverse. Filing folds, otherwise very fine and most attractive. San Francisco is a suburb of Panama City. A fine cover and a rare destination from Panama. Route - Panama, New Zealand and Australian Royal Mail Company: Departed Panama 31 Aug 1866 per “Ruahine” via Wellington (2 Oct) to Sydney (9 Oct). Private steamship: Departed Sydney (11 Oct) per “You Yangs” to Melbourne, arriving 13 Oct 1866 (49 days). Note: The earliest and the finest of the three recorded covers from Panama to the Australian Colonies. Provenance: Collection De Voss
