1843 (Aug 1): 30 r. grey-black on greyish paper, intermediate impression, an unused block of four from the Large Plate, State A, positions 38-39/44-45, some defects including thinning and nick into the first stamp at top and with minor creasing largely unapparent on face, but with ample to large margins all round, without gum. A multiple of fine appearance and extremely rare - there being just three large unused multiples of the 30 reis (all three are in blocks of four). Illustrated in Bernd Juchert "Ochseneaugen Im Viererblock", item 6 on page 12. An extremely rare multiple of the Number One. 1843 (Aug 1): 30 r. black, fine impression, a vertical pair, Large Plate, State A, positions 41 / 47, used on reverse of 16 February 1848 single rate entire letter from Barra Mansa to Rio de Janeiro, the stamps of excellent rich colour and with large margins all round but re-backed to the entire, tied by framed "BARRA / MANÇA" handstamp in brown (Ayres fig. 1230), the cancellation retouched. Nevertheless an exceptional and extremely rare usage, the sole recorded Bulls Eye cover from this town. Illustrated if incorrectly described in Bernd Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 295 and illustrated in "Carimbos sobra os olhos-de-boi" by H. Bunselmeyer Ferreira on page 30. 30 reis black, late intermediate impression, the spectacular horizontal strip of three on July 1848 cover from Diamantino addressed to an Apostolic Missionary in Rio de Janeiro, obverse struck with negative "DIAMTO." handstamp in black, the exceptional adhesives (with large margins all round, third stamp small scissor cut in margin only) from the First Composite plate, State B, positions 8-10, being tied by manuscript "Agencia do Diamte...Julho de 1848" and by part "Correio Geral Da Corte" arrival datestamp (July 20) in black. Illustrated in Bernd Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 183. A rare example of the ¾ ounce rate and a delightful and extremely rare cover: the sole recorded cover bearing a strip of three 30 reis and the sole recorded usage from Diamantino. Cert. 1843 (Aug 1): 60 r. black, fine impression, a four margined example in a deep shade, used as seal on reverse of March 1845 cover from Vassouras to Sorocaba via Rio de Janeiro; cancelled by bold strike of framed "VA. DE VASSOURAS" handstamp in black (Ayres fig. 1530). Cover folded for better Exhibit display, the obverse showing Correio Geral Da Corte datestamp (March 15). Small faults to address panel through acid ink, the adhesive removed, with closed tear and paper split restored and replaced. Illustrated in Bernd Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 269. Despite faults an appealing cover, Juchert records just one other Bullseye cover from Vassouras which is not as attractive. Rare.
