1897: Stampless mourning envelope to Gibraltar with circular regimental cachet "BATTALON PROVISIONAL DE PUERTO-RICO No. 1" in blue, treated as unpaid upon arrival in Spain in transit with "T / ESPAGNE' handstamp in black deleted in blue crayon manuscript. Reverse with partial despatch cds (May 14) and complete "Gibraltar " arrival cds (June 1) in black. Despite imperfections to envelope a rare example of Official Military mail sent after the insurrection of 1895 in Puerto Rico that had reached political autonomy in 1897 and prior to the American invasion of 1898.
