Reverend Herbert Amyot Brereton Wilson Correspondence 1881 (Jan-Nov): Three covers from Wilson (1857-1882) all to the Reverend Barnett in Wheatley, Oxfordshire, two with long, full and interesting contents (incl. a hand-drawn map and also a contemporary photograph of Wilson taken in Oxford), with 1881 cover to Wheatley, franked by India ½ a. blue and 2 a. orange (2) tied by "BRITISH / P.O. / ZANZIBAR / B" duplex (Jan 24) with Aden transit (Feb 11) and Oxford cds (March 7); second extraordinary cover with full contents written from Magila to Wheatley, franked by India ½ a. blue and 4 a. green similarly tied by "BRITISH / P.O. / ZANZIBAR / B" duplex (May 14), readdressed upon arrival with GB Inland Revenue 1 d. purple, Die IV, tied by "Oxford / 603" duplex (June 27) to London with nine page letter including a map showing the location of the Umba Mission and the 13 villages in the locality "I am the only European in the whole of this land now..." followed by a dramatic account "(my) men were entering Uvumba they were encountered by a number of men with guns who attacked them and drove them back, taking their donkeys and threatening to kill them and every European they could find". Third cover written on November 1st with India ½ a. blue and 4 a. green similarly tied by "BRITISH / P.O. / ZANZIBAR / B" duplex (Nov 16) with a letter from Umba carried by messenger to Pangani on the coast and thence to Zanzibar where mailed; the letter including an account of the conversion of Chief Semkali at Umba "he has grasped the full force of Christianity". The covers and contents explained well on the album leaves; Wilson died of fever at Pangani on 12 September 1882 and his faithful staff carried his body all the way to the coast. Faults but an exceptional group Gi Z12+Z13+Z16.
