1843 (Aug 1): 60 r. black, late fine impression, a used block of nine from the 1st Composite Plate, State B with large margins all round and showing the horizontal dividing lines at top and twice at base, positions 3-6 / 9-11 / 15-17; cancelled by framed "CIDADE / DE / NICHTHEROY" handstamps (Ayres fig. 1371) in black. The multiple with ironed creasing and six thins and some repairs leaving the block with a washed appearance; nevertheless of great rarity with just four multiples larger than this known and thus an important showpiece. Illustrated in Bernd Juchert "Ochsenaugen im Viererblock", item 121 on page 49. Manuscript docketing of receipt at left, minor ageing to letter sheet and trivial fault to the upper margin of the adhesive but of great rarity with only two Bulls Eye covers known with this cancellation. Illustrated in "Carimbos sobre os olhos-de-boi" by Henrique Bunselmayer Ferreira on page 5; and in Bernd Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 52. A delightful and very rare entire. 1843 (Aug 1): 60 reis grey-black, late intermediate impressions, a single and horizontal pair used on 1845 entire letter endorsed "p. Vapor" and carried by sea at double rate from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande (Pedrick correspondence), the adhesives all with four margins and the pair slightly overlapping the single which has a closed tear at lower right, the cover with some minor soiling of no importance, tied by rimless "CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE" circular datestamps (March 1) in black. The letter has been affected by damp but exhibits well and is of great rarity, with just two other covers from Rio being recorded with this franking. Illustrated in "Bulls Eyes on Covers" by Bernd Juchert on page 139. Cert. Moorhouse (2013). Provenance: Heinrich Köhler sale 323, Wiesbaden, Jan 2004, lot 45; collection Luis Alemany Indarte, Corinphila sale 181, June 2013, lot 204. Note: Interesting contents for the US Consul "the debate about Texas was going on, but it was generally thought nothing would be done this session of Congress". This turned out be erroneous: as Presidents Tyler and Polk managed to get the joint resolution passed on 1 March 1845, and Texas was admitted into the United States on 29 December 1845.
