1852 (Nov): Perkins Bacon Master Die Proof for the 5 c. value, engraved in black directly on to thick card (37 x 40 mm.) with champfered corners at top, showing a full albino impression of the oval engine turning surround (see illustration). An exquisite and extremely rare Proof. Note: Perkins Bacon printed 1'250 sheets of the 5 c. value in December 1852. They arrived in Valparaiso in May 1853 and were issued on July 1, 1853 to meet a major reduction in the Postal Rates that were effective from 23 June 1853.

1852 (Dec): Perkins Bacon Plate Proof, imperforate on unwatermarked thick toned paper, the extraordinary block of forty-four subjects (11 x 4) printed in black. The block with large even margins all round, tiny marginal tear at right between the third and fourth rows, minor ironed wrinkles not affecting the stunning appearance of such a large multiple - originally the second largest recorded, although this describer believes the larger multiple may now been split and thus this is probably the largest now extant. Perkins Bacon 1853 (July 1): 5 c. brown-red on blued, a single example with clear to large margins all round, used on 1853 entire letter from Copiapo endorsed "Por Vapor Neuva Granada" to Valparaiso tied by rare usage of seven barred target handstamp in bluish-black. Despatch handstamp of "COPIAPO" straight line in red below. The cover, with heavy file fold not affecting the adhesive, did not travel by the designated PSNC Steamer as just 5 centavos was prepaid and thus journeyed overland to destination. Cert. An attractive and scarce cover Scott = $ 400+. Note: It should be pointed out that multiples, especially of the early issues are very scarce as there were few Post Offices and thus the "Estafetas" which also sold tobacco, salt and other Government controlled goods, were also contracted to sell postage stamps. They were supplied and sold singly and thus multiples emanate from mail sent from Post Offices.
