The Engraving records of Perkins, Bacon & Co. show that the Dies were not completed until February 16, 1853. 1853 (Feb): Die Proof for the 1 d. value, engraved by William Humphrys in black directly on thick cream card (70 x 70 mm.), the design showing the engraver's guidelines surrounding the stamp on all three sides, prior to burnishing. A superb and extremely rare Die Proof of the greatest significance both in Cape of Good Hope and in British Commonwealth philately. Note: The work was that of the master engraver William Humphrys who was also responsible for the USA New York 1845 Postmaster Provisional when he was employed by Rawden, Wright & Hatch; and further famous designs for Perkins, Bacon such as the Western Australia 1854 1 d. Swan and the 1855 New Zealand Chalon Heads. Provenance: Collection Louise Boyd-Dale & Alfred F. 1853 (Sept): 1 d. pale brick-red on deeply blued paper, a used example with ample to large margins all round, on 1856 Soldier's Concessionary rate cover to Sevenoaks, Kent tied by CGH obliterator in black. The cover mailed endorsed from "Private Thos. Bidgood of the 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regt." at Grahamstown, countersigned by R. Miller, Capt. Commanding Detachment"; carried on the bark "Wellington" arriving at Cape Town (Feb 8, 1856) from Madras, bound for London where it arrived (April 13) with red London 'Paid' cds. Reverse with oval framed GRAHAMSTOWN datestamp (Feb 5) in red,CAPE TOWN / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE cds (Feb 9) in red and Sevenoaks cds of arrival in blue. Central file fold well away from the fine adhesive; Soldier's Letters bearing the first issue 1 d. adhesive are rarities, this being a very fine example. Cert. BPA (1989). Note: In February 1856 the 45th Regiment's HQ was moved to Fort Beaufort and the detachments on the Buffalo River were relieved by troops of the 73rd Regiment; therefore it is likely that Pte. Bigwood was advising his correspondent of the move to Fort Beaufort. The letter could have only been carried by Private Ship as it was mailed during the period between April 1854 and September 1856 when the General Screw Shipping Co. abandoned their contract due to the Crimean War, with the Lindsay line contract starting on 9 September 1856. It is interesting to note that in the Joseph Hackmey collection (Edition D'Or XXII, published by Corinphila) there is a further Soldier's letter (illustrated on page 35) from this voyage of the "Wellington" - where the master of the ship, one W. Black, declined to charge his Captain's gratuity and the letter was, unusually, delivered without further charge. Provenance: Collection "Franschhoek", Spink, London, 20 June 2012, lot 66.

1853 (Sept): 1 d. pale brick-red on deeply blued paper, a block of four with touched to large margins and showing portions of an adjoining two stamps, used on 1855 entire letter from Port Elizabeth addressed to the shipping agents Messrs. Wm. Saxon & Co. in Cape Town tied by two strikes of the CGH obliterator in black. Reverse with oval framed PORT ELIZABETH despatch (June 13) and oval framed CAPE TOWN arrival (June 16) struck in red. The block has been lifted from the entire and replaced with small surface thinning at the base of the pair; nevertheless an entire of great rarity. Cert. Peter Holcombe (1986). Note: Since the Mail Cart, Route Number 4, from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town generally took six days travelling via Somerset East, this entire would have been delivered by ship from Algoa Bay.
