1856 (Oct 21): 6 d. deep lilac, wmk. Emblems, perf. 14, used in combination with 1857 1 d. red, Die II, wmk. Large Crown, perf. 14 and 1858 2 d. blue plate plate 7, from London to India, dated 3 March 1859, tied by the Charles Rideout Experimental Machine number '1' duplex cancel, Type II, in black, endorsed 'India via Marseille', addressed to 'Captain Griffiths, Her Majesty's 19th Regiment'. On arrival has been redirected with multiple transit and arrival marks to reverse with a final destination dated 13 April 1859. The 6 d. has corner clipped lower left and 2 d. dulled perfs top right. Heavily stained and soiled with tear to left side. However, a characterful cover and a scarce tri-colour 9 d. rate with the experimental duplex. In addition, comes with a page comprising two covers illustrating the Charles Rideout Machine '1' Transit cds in red from the First Trial, both examples franked with 1857 1 d. red dated 28 June and 20 December 1858 (Code HS)

To the reverse a London EC arrival cds in red (Oct 12). Minor soiling. A fine and rare example; one of two reported covers. Note: Although the Pearson Hill Parallel Motion Machine had been selected by the London Post Office in 1859 for wide-spread use, Charles Rideout pressed for additional trials and in 1866 the GPO conducted a second trial which was also not successful for Rideout

1856/59: Two exhibition pages featuring four covers illustrating the Charles Rideout Experimental Machine number '1' duplex cancel - Type I and II. Covers include; 1856 1 s. green, plate 1, wmk. Emblems, perf. 14, used on small envelope, London to Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece, dated 15 May 1858, tied by Charles Rideout Machine '1' Duplex, Type I, in black. A rare example especially to Corfu. Comes on a page with a mourning cover franked with 1868 6 d. lilac, plate 1, wmk. Emblems, perf. 14 (trimmed at base) sent from London to Gibraltar tied by the same cancel dated 16 August 1858 (SG 70). The other page has an Eastern Counties Railway envelope franked with an 1857 1 d. red, perf. 14, sent locally cancelled by Charles Rideout Machine '1' Duplex, Type II, dated 15 February 1859 (SG 40). Accompanied by a cover franked with 1858 2 d. blue plate 7 sent from London to Macclesfield tied by the same cancellation (Machine '1' Type II) dated 2 May 1859 (SG 45). An attractively presented study informatively written-up. Scarce selection (4)

1857/59: Two exhibition pages featuring three covers illustrating the Charles Rideout Experimental Machine number '2' duplex cancel - Type I and II. The first page features a mourning cover and a wrapper both franked with 1857 1 d. red, perf. 14, tied by fine strikes of the Number '2' experimental duplex Type I, Code 'CR' in black dated 26 February and 18 June 1859 respectively. Both fine and attractive. The second page illustrates the Machine '2' duplex Type II, Code 'RC' cancelling a horizontal pair 1857 1 d. red dated 4 June 1859 (a Sunday), which is the latest known usage of this postmark. The cover has a central vertical filing crease clear of adhesives and soiling to left half, however a rare cover. Additionally, comes with a page comprising two covers (faults) illustrating the Charles Rideout Machine '2' Arrival cds in red from the First Trial, one with 1857 1 d. red and the other a stampless cover from Amsterdam dated 28 October and 22 November 1859 (Code CR)
