and 1858
1856 (Oct 21): 6 d. deep lilac, wmk. Emblems, perf. 14, used in
combination with 1857 1 d. red, Die II, wmk. Large Crown, perf. 14
and 1858 2 d. blue plate plate 7, from London to India, dated 3
March 1859, tied by the Charles Rideout Experimental Machine number
'1' duplex cancel, Type II, in black, endorsed 'India via
Marseille', addressed to 'Captain Griffiths, Her Majesty's 19th
Regiment'. On arrival has been redirected with multiple transit and
arrival marks to reverse with a final destination dated 13 April
1859. The 6 d. has corner clipped lower left and 2 d. dulled perfs
top right. Heavily stained and soiled with tear to left side.
However, a characterful cover and a scarce tri-colour 9 d. rate
with the experimental duplex. In addition, comes with a page
comprising two covers illustrating the Charles Rideout Machine '1'
